As we head into November, the North Pacific and North Atlantic storm tracks really crank up with hurricane force extratropical cyclones. During my research days at Florida State (2005-2010) my work focused on the mature stage of these monster oceanic storm systems — called “warm seclusion” extratropical cyclones because of the powerful winds around an eye-like warm core (relative to the surroundings).
A textbook example in the Northeast Pacific / Gulf of Alaska has dropped into the 950s mb — similar to a major hurricane pressure in the tropics.
