The NASA GEOS5 model — their version of GFS that is run for experimental purposes — shows the thick dust plume extending from Morocco to Guyana. Yes, that’s all Saharan Air Layer dust from the desert landscape being sent to South America. This is iron rich and provides nutrients for the entire food chain from bacteria and critters to the bigger mammals and fish that consume them. Red tide in the Gulf of Mexico is a considerable threat when this plume of SAL dust arrives, especially with the amazing sea surface temperatures.
