Much cooler Atlantic signals less active hurricane season

Global tropical temperatures are MUCH cooler compared to April 2024 by 0.5°C. You can see the widespread blue around the Equator with the Atlantic tropics much cooler than last year. Of course, Spring 2024 was very warm across the Eastern Tropical Atlantic, but for whatever reason, tropical waves did not emerge off the coast of Africa at a south enough latitude to take advantage of that warmed water. Instead, a combination of Saharan Dust Layers and unfavorable upper-level winds (shear) kept a lid on Main Development Region (MDR) hurricane activity through the end of September.
