March 5, 2025 Wednesday Weather Update

Tropical Storm Alfred to flood eastern Australia

What the month did

March 2025 was the 7th-warmest March in the 132-year national record (1895–2026), at 46.8°F against a 1991–2020 normal of 43.6°F (+3.3°F).

March 2025 was the 57th-driest March in the 132-year national record (1895–2026), at 2.4in against a 1991–2020 normal of 2.5in (-0.1in).

NOAA/NCEI Climate at a Glance, contiguous United States. This is the observed record for the month, not a score of anything said in this piece — the forecast ledger begins 2026-08-17 and cannot reach earlier posts.

Tropical Storm Alfred (18P) is spinning off Brisbane and moving slowly westward on a rare track to make landfall along the E. Australia coast. Environmental conditions are not ideal for a hurricane with high wind shear and cooler waters, so weakening is likely prior to reaching the coast. But the slow movement and onshore moisture flow will drench / flood the immediate coast with 20-inches of rain, or perhaps more.

IR Satellite Imagery shows a sheared tropical storm but some convection is bursting south of the low-level center.
