The Northeast Pacific storm track really cranks up with a series of powerful cyclones bringing huge atmospheric rivers of moisture crashing into the coast. Rainfall and snowfall with be extreme especially for Oregon and Washington. However, California remains mostly unscathed as high pressure remains in charge.

ECMWF 12z HRES does develop a very powerful bomb cyclone well enough off the East Coast to avoid major winter impacts to the Northeast early next week. We’ll be watching for any westward adjustment or trend in this forecast because that could mean a significant blizzard. However, this is only a 5-day forecast at this point, so with lack of ensemble support, the chances of a major impact winter system are probably 1 in 5.
